Movie Monday Presents: Evil Dead (2013) *NSFW*

The remake of the original movie made in 1981 came out last year, and it had mixed reviews, but is this movie be as good/bad as people say? Is it really the most terrifying film as they claim? Come with me and find it out. By the way, there would be spoilers, but actually the story on this movie is not that complex, so i think you would be ok.

Nowadays it’s usual to see remakes of old classic movies such as Chucky, Godzilla, I Am Legend, Karate Kid among others. Some of them are good, some are so bad, and that led me to the next question: Can a remake be as good as the original movie? Well, I’m in a dilemma with Evil Dead, because it’s ALMOST perfect in what it does, but they somehow manage to screw it.

We got a pretty average story: a group of 5 teenagers go to a cabin on the woods as they try to help their friend to recover from addiction to drugs (because you know, going to a creepy place away from everyone and everything is always a great idea). Now, she is going to make everything to escape from this intervention, so when bad things start to happen, they don’t believe her.

Inside the cabin they found a book called “Naturom Demonto” (“Necronomicon” or “Book of the Dead”) and even if it is covered with hundreds of warnings, one of them decides that is a great idea to read it out loud, summoning an evil spirit who later possess the body of the girl who is addicted to drugs.

Naturally, as I said before, no one believes her, thinking that is a trick of her to escape the intervention one more time. Until now it sounds pretty generic, isn’t? Fortunately this is where the good part begins. I must say that i’m glad they didn’t use CGI effects, because they really made a great and grotesque (in a good way) job with the make up.

To be honest i’ve never felt so disgusted with any gore movie before. They really manage to create grotesque scenes with blood, mutilations, pain among others. Some people may disagree with me, but seriously watch the next picture and judge by yourself.

The rest of the movie is a gore fest, and good one to be honest. They try to explain the possession like some kind of “virus” and I’m ok with it, because this is an easier way to explain how and why they get “possessed”.

This guy called Eric (Lou Taylor Pucci) is the one who gets the worst part. It was by far my favorite character not only because he read the book, but also because he is abused so hard and every scene with him is painful to see. If I had to rename this movie it would be: “How much can Eric take before he faint?”

They did a great job so far, unfortunately the ending wasn’t so good like the rest of the movie. In my opinion it was kinda random, probably rushed out as they tried to please the fan base of the old movie with the chainsaw arm.

Even with that little detail, the movie was exactly what I was looking for. It wasn’t exactly terrifying, but it was pretty awesome and I hope to see more movies with this amount of quality in the future.

Rating: 4.7 out of 5
