My opinion about: “Tomb Raider: Rise of the Xbox One…”

By this time, you may heard the news and if you don’t, well, here is for you. A few days ago, Crystal Dynamics made an announcement, where they mentioned that the sequel for the so acclaimed Tomb Raider, known as Rise of the Tomb Raider, was going to be an exclusive for the Xbox One only.

This was a surprise for everyone, especially for the community on PC and PS4 who, as you must imagine, was angry and disappointed with this decision.

Darrell Gallagher, head of studios on Crystal Dynamics, tried to explain this situation to the gamer community on Tomb Raider’s tumblr. This was his statement:

“As you may have seen, we’ve just announced that Rise of the Tomb Raider, coming Holiday 2015, is exclusively on Xbox. We consider all of you to be the lifeblood of Tomb Raider and the work we do at Crystal. I’d like to give you some insight into this decision, and why we feel this is the very best thing for the Tomb Raider sequel we’re creating at the studio.”

Now here is the curious thing, it says that we, the gamer community, are the “lifeblood” of Tomb Raider. If that’s so, then why take a game that was multi-platform at first, and then make it exclusive for just one console? In fact, with this decision they are blocking 2 thirds of the people who loved the first game!(without mentioning that the Xbox one is selling less than PS4 and PC).

Are they really doing the best thing for their game? Indeed they are, and before you start cursing me, read my next point. Sure, gamers are the lifeblood of any game, but not just because they enjoy it, of course not. It’s because you pay for the game, but if a company comes and offer them a huge amount of money to make it exclusive for their system, they will take the money, because that is what allows them to make more games.

You may think that Microsoft could not do such a thing (pay a lot of money to companies and people, just to make their console look more appealing) but this is not the first time that something like this happens. Maybe some of you never heard about this but, did you know that Microsoft at some point, was paying youtubers to talk good about their console? The deal was that they shouldn’t mention that they were being paid for that, which in my knowledge, it’s illegal.

“This doesn’t mean that we’re walking away from our fans who only play on PlayStation or on PC. Those are great systems, with great partners, and amazing communities. We have Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris coming to those platforms this December, and Tomb Raider: The Definitive Edition is available on PS4.”

Of course they are! they want to induce us to buy an Xbox, but why should we? I mean, if you want to buy the console, it’s great. You surely are going to have great moments playing on it, but it‘s wrong to buy it just because they took a game as their “hostage”. But hey, don’t worry, it is confirmed by now that it’s only a time exclusive, so sooner or later, you will have it on your PC and/or PS4.

But this, this is all our fault. We are costumers, and we have the right and the will to choose what we want and what we don’t, but most of us, allow companies to get away with everything they do. Oh, you don’t believe me? We allow companies to sell us incomplete, broken games sometimes (*Cough* EA *Cough*), where you have to buy DLC’s (and even worse, DLC’s ON DAY ONE!) to experience the full story, or you get a huge patch on the day of release. And all of this because we throw money at companies before the game is even released.

But that is another topic. Long story short, don’t panic, it will eventually come to the other platforms, and with some luck, without all the problems that usually all games have on day one.
